3D Printing & Scanning

At the moment, HHS has two 3D printers, as well as a 3D scanner. 3D printing can be self-serve, or another Hackerspace member can lend a hand. In addition, laser cutting will be available soon.

Available Devices

Self-Serve Printing

Haus members have access to self-serve printing by bringing their own printer spool and installing the Bambu slicer package. Filament storage is provided, and access to the printer is provided free of charge.

Assisted Printing

If you need a more complex print, or you are not comfortable operating the printers yourself, another Hackerspace member can help you run it, provided you have your own model. This is simply members helping members, on a voluntary basis and free of charge.

Printer Access Policy

Please note that printing only happens while a Hackerspace member is on hand to help with the setup. Once a print is set up, long-running jobs can be left unattended. This is for safety, as well as ensuring the printers themselves are maintained and properly used.

Damage and Accident Policy

We want everyone to feel comfortable using the printers, so this policy is about fairness, not blame. Normal wear and the occasional failed print are simply part of 3D printing, and are never charged to users. Build plates, nozzles and similar parts are consumables, and we expect them to age with use.

If damage does result from clearly improper use of the equipment — for example, destroying a build plate by running material at temperatures it was not designed for, or ignoring posted limits for a given printer — we would simply talk it through with you to find a fair way to put things right. Our focus is on keeping the equipment available for everyone, not on penalising honest mistakes.

"Proper use" simply means:

Damage that happens while following these guidelines in good faith is on us, not you. If something goes wrong, please let a Hackerspace member know so we can keep the equipment in good shape for everyone.

Contact

The 3D printing and scanning equipment has been lent to the space by Russell Gill for free community use. It is not run as a business, and no one profits from it. For any questions about the printers, scanning, or arranging a print, please email a Hackerspace member at hafnarhackerspace [at] proton.me.
